The Captain’s Corner

2018 will mark my seventh year as Captain of the Virginia Hickory Golf Association and with each new year comes an increased appreciation for and participation in hickory golf. Our members bring a passion and sense of community which makes this pastime quite unique and special. It is my pleasure and honor to serve the association in this role.

History of the Association

The VAHGA was founded in 2012 when 12 hardy souls met on a cold winters day to hammer out the particulars of starting an organization. Our first goal was to establish a mission statement: “To enjoy and promote hickory golf in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic”. To this extent we have been very successful. We now have 34 dues paying members with 18 being lifetime members. We have had 4 matches with the North Carolina group and we have had 5 Virginia Hickory Invitationals. We try to have a hickory outing on a monthly basis weather permitting. Our core philosophy is to try to give as many people the experience of playing clubs from the days gone by. A good man once said “a good shot hit with a modern club goes well, a good shot with a hickory club you feel it in your soul” I would invite any and all to look over our site and please consider becoming a member of The Virginia Hickory Golf Association.

What to expect in 2018

We hope to make 2018 a great year for the members of the VAHGA. The 2018 Virginia Hickory Open will be held at Capon Springs and Farms May 18 – 20. We are in negotiation with clubs turning 100 years old to try and put on member events as well as other clubs that just want to have a hickory outing for their members. We are looking forward to a great year and hope to see you on the links.
