Deal Hudson

Deal W. Hudson is a founding member of the Virginia Hickory Golf Association. He plays a long ball and always leads the pack in haberdashery flair! He and Tom Mehigan formed the “haberdashery committee” at VaHGA and were usually the best dressed at any event! Sadly, (for us) Deal has moved south to warmer climes in Lilburn, Georgia, but he will always be one of us.

“I’m Deal Hudson. I turned 70 November 20, 2019. I started playing hickories in 2011 and am grateful I did. I’ve become a better golfer and, more importantly, made dear friends who love the game as much or more than I do. I have a few trophies to my credit and I’m damn proud of them. My game overall is not what it was the first few years of hickory golfing, but I can still rise to the occasion from time to time. I hope to win again somewhere somehow.”

What’s in Deal’s Bag?
I began playing with hickory replicas from Mike Just at Louisville Golf. Later I bought both versions of iron replicas from Tad Moore along with a few of his great putters.  My first set of originals were Stewart’s, 1-8 irons. I added an original Stewart niblick with a flange which was replicated by Louisville Golf (best club I own!). Last year I bought an original Forgan set of iron which is at least as good as the Stewart’s. I say this with the understanding that no iron works well without the appropriate shaft.  I also enjoy playing pre-1900 hickory golf with gutters, and I own a combination of Tad Moore replicas and originals (driver, spoon, clerk, niblick, and putter). Finally, I enjoyed the privilege of playing featheries at Old Musselborough in Scotland. I’ve learned over and over again that golf is golf regardless of what you’re swinging and what you’re hitting. It all goes back to your swing and self-command.
